03 / Legends
Lost movie palaces of Detroit and Michigan
When did they open, when did the screen go dark, and what stands there now? The stories of the closed cinemas, with their old contact details.
1941–2021
Main Art Theatre
Royal Oak
Metro Detroit's best-known art house, in Royal Oak: it opened in 1941 as a plain single-screen movie house, turned to independent, foreign and classic films in 1983 and ran midnight cult movies on Friday and Saturday nights.
2009–2023
Cinema Detroit
Detroit
Midtown's independent art house from 2009 to 2023: it started in an old school auditorium, then screened films in a converted furniture factory with two screens. Today it lives on as a pop-up series around metro Detroit.
1926
Guild Theatre
Detroit
A tiny 346-seat house on Gratiot Avenue that opened as the Franklin in 1926 and became the Guild, the east side's foreign-film house, in 1962. Closed since the early 2000s, its marquee is slowly losing its letters.
1941–1990
Krim Theatre
Highland Park
Highland Park's 760-seat Streamline Moderne cinema on Woodward, next to the Uptown. In the 1950s it was an art house, and its nearly year-long run of Marlon Brando's Julius Caesar out-grossed most downtown palaces.
1942–1991
Telenews Theater
Detroit
Detroit's first full-time newsreel theatre, opened in 1942: hourly news on screen, a glass globe above the marquee, a radio studio in the basement and a teletype clattering in the lobby. It has been a nightclub since 2000.
1977–2024
Maple Theater
Bloomfield Township
A three-screen cinema on West Maple Road in Bloomfield Township. It opened in 1977, became an independent art house with a coffeehouse and full bar in 2012, and closed abruptly in February 2024.
1966–1999
Ann Arbor I & II (Fifth Forum)
Ann Arbor
Ann Arbor's art and foreign film house on South 5th Avenue opened in 1966 as the Vth Forum with a Godard film, later became the two-screen Ann Arbor Theatre and ran until 1999.
2013–2024
Bijou by the Bay
Traverse City
The Traverse City Film Festival's second cinema, inside the 1934 Con Foster Museum building in Clinch Park right on the bay, showed independent and festival films from 2013 to 2024.
