Frank Lloyd Wright Affleck House – Behind the Scenes

Detroit Historical Society leads a behind-the-scenes visit to the Affleck House in Bloomfield Hills on Sunday, October 11, at 4 p.m., inside the first Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home in the Detroit area. Tickets are $55 for members and $65 general admission, but it's sold out.

The Affleck House is a Usonian design, Wright's answer to beautiful, thoughtfully planned homes that an average American family could afford. It sits in harmony with its natural surroundings and stands as one of the best examples of his later work.

Lawrence Technological University received the house as a donation in 1978 and still owns and maintains it. Ongoing restoration keeps it preserved, and the College of Architecture and Design uses it as a teaching resource. The visit runs from 4 to 5 p.m.

Parking is very limited: a few spots on Bloomfield Woods near the house and parallel parking on Scenic Oaks Dr. N. No parking on other neighborhood streets, so carpool if you can. Some rooms and passageways are narrow, and the house is not wheelchair accessible.
