Julie Dash
Visionary filmmaker, writer, and cultural historian Julie Dash headlines The Wright Conversations on Friday, December 4, at 6 p.m. at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History’s General Motors Theater in Detroit. The groundbreaking Daughters of the Dust director sits down for a live conversation; tickets $25, VIP meet & greet $40.
Julie Dash made history with Daughters of the Dust, the first feature by an African American woman to receive a wide theatrical release. Her films center racial justice, migration, diasporic identity, and the lives of Black women; the Library of Congress has preserved both Daughters of the Dust and her short Illusions in the National Film Registry. Recent museum work includes Standing at The Scratch Line in Philadelphia and Shine a Light, created for The Wright’s And Still We Rise exhibition.
The Wright Conversations is a curated lecture-and-conversation series moderated by the museum’s CEO and President, Neil A. Barclay, followed by audience Q&A. This event takes place in the General Motors Theater; a VIP meet and greet follows immediately after the program with open bar and hors d’oeuvres.
