Scott Gwinnell Orchestra Mulgrew-ology
Scott Gwinnell’s band explored the music of late jazz pianist Mulgrew Miller at Cliff Bell’s in Detroit on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, starting at 7 p.m. They played arrangements highlighting Miller’s compositions with a 17-piece orchestra.
Mulgrew Miller might not be a household name among casual jazz fans, but he’s revered by musicians for his harmonic depth and swinging style. Detroit-based pianist, composer, and arranger Scott Gwinnell’s second Detroit Music Factory record, Mulgrew-ology, dives into Miller’s work beyond just piano playing—focusing on his writing and arranging. Gwinnell weaves Miller’s compositional ideas into fresh arrangements performed by a 17-piece orchestra, offering a new perspective on Miller’s legacy. The evening started at 7 p.m. with a student band, followed by Scott Gwinnell’s orchestra at 8 p.m., all at Cliff Bell’s. Tickets were $10.
