Harlow/Formanek Duo at Cliff Bell’s
East Coast musicians saxophonist Peter Formanek and pianist Josh Harlow played a duo concert on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. at Detroit’s Cliff Bell’s. Their set blended energetic improvisations and melodic explorations in a close musical conversation.
Peter Formanek and Josh Harlow first met at Edgefest, an improvised music festival held annually at Kerrytown Concert House in Ann Arbor. Drawing on shared musical influences from Messiaen to Monk to Mary Halvorson, they quickly started performing as a duo. Their concert at Cliff Bell’s featured lively, energetic improvisations alongside delicate melodic and tonal explorations, creating a fresh freedom within old forms and spontaneous compositions.
