Ladysmith Black Mambazo at The Ark in Ann Arbor
Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the legendary South African isicathamiya group, performed on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at 8 p.m. at The Ark in Ann Arbor. Founded by Joseph Shabalala and later led by his sons, the group has won multiple Grammy Awards.
Joseph Shabalala started Ladysmith Black Mambazo in 1960 amid the hardships of apartheid South Africa, using the isicathamiya singing style developed by black mine workers. Their peaceful songs of hope gained worldwide acclaim, including several Grammy wins and recognition from Nelson Mandela himself. Now led by Shabalala's sons, the group continues his legacy. This historic performance happened at The Ark, a staple music venue in Ann Arbor.
