Rod Williams Quartet
Pianist and composer Rod Williams played a reunion gig June 29, Saturday at 9:30 p.m. at Cliff Bell’s in Detroit with Bowens, Jonathon Muir-Cotton, and Djallo Djakate.
Born in Detroit in 1954 and trained by Kenny Cox, Rod Williams moved to New York in 1981 after encouragement from Henry Threadgill. Known for his work with left-of-center jazz figures like David Murray and Cassandra Wilson, Williams mixes percussive driving rhythms with smooth melodic improvisations. The June 29 show at Cliff Bell’s was a reunion with longtime collaborators Bowens on saxophone, Jonathon Muir-Cotton on acoustic bass, and Djallo Djakate on drums.
