Wendell Harrison and Tribe Concert
Wendell Harrison and the Tribe band played at Cliff Bell’s in Detroit on Saturday, April 9, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. Tribe is a unique jazz collective known for blending Black musical and political consciousness.
In 1970, Wendell Harrison moved to California, collaborating with notable artists like vocalist Esther Phillips and saxophonist Art Pepper. Returning to Detroit in 1971, he formed the Tribe collective with Phil Ranelin and others, a group that voiced Black political consciousness through music. Tribe performed live and released records that have been reissued multiple times, influencing the global techno scene decades later. Their 2022 show at Cliff Bell’s highlighted this rich musical legacy.
