Esthesis Quartet
Esthesis Quartet played original jazz on Sunday, October 23, at 7:30 p.m. at Detroit’s Cliff Bell’s. The group’s music breaks traditional jazz roles with free, adventurous compositions.
Formed in spring 2021, Esthesis Quartet features pianist Dawn Clement, flutist Elsa Nilsson, drummer Tina Raymond, and bassist Emma Dayhuff. Their original jazz blends mutual respect with bold freedom, exploring surprising musical directions. Named for the basic sensations of touch, their music reflects the connections they missed during lockdown. The quartet members live across four US time zones—Denver, New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles—and are all active performers, composers, and educators.
Their Detroit concert took place at Cliff Bell’s, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets were $25. It was a great evening for anyone into inventive, modern jazz.
