Sky Covington’s Satin Doll Revue
Sky Covington and the Duke Ellington Band paid tribute to jazz and blues legends on Saturday, January 11, at 7:30 p.m. at Detroit’s Cliff Bell’s. Four powerhouse vocalists brought to life the souls of Nina Simone, Etta James, Dinah Washington, and Billie Holiday with live music.
The Satin Doll Revue was an unforgettable evening honoring the great ladies of jazz and blues, led by Sky Covington. Faye Bradford expressed the depth of Nina Simone, Tosha Owens delivered the raw power of Etta James, and Nina Simone Neal brought out Dinah Washington’s versatility. Sky Covington hauntingly revived Billie Holiday’s heartfelt songs. The band—Gerard Gibbs on piano, Terence Neal on drums, and Ibrahim Jones on upright bass—filled every note with soul. The stage at Cliff Bell’s was a vintage hub, and the audience experienced a memorable journey through jazz and blues history.
