The Northwoods Improvisers and Session
On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, The Northwoods Improvisers Sextet performed at Cliff Bell’s in Detroit, starting at 7:30 p.m. They showcased their blend of composed and improvised music weaving Eastern and Native American influences.
Formed in 1976, The Northwoods Improvisers evolved into an acoustic sextet featuring bass, drums, saxophones, cello, and violin. The rhythm section of Mike Johnston and Nick Ashton anchors the band, while Donovan Boxey and Dominic Bieringa provide shifting saxophone sounds, and Mike Khoury with Jack O’Brien add string textures. Their music combines composed pieces with collective improvisation, drawing from Eastern modes and indigenous sounds rarely represented in history. Their concert at Cliff Bell’s included material from a new album slated for release in June 2023.
