The Northwoods Improvisers and Session at Cliff Bell’s
The Northwoods Improvisers played a concert on Wednesday, June 25, at 7:30 p.m. at Cliff Bell’s in Detroit. Their acoustic sextet delivered a set of unique, improvisational compositions.
The Northwoods Improvisers formed in 1976 and blend acoustic improvisation with Eastern modes and Native American elements. The sextet features Mike Johnston on bass, Nick Ashton on drums, Donovan Boxey and Dominic Bieringa on saxophones, Jack O’Brien on cello, and Mike Khoury on violin. Their performance mixed composed pieces with collective improvisation, drawing on historically underrepresented musical influences. The concert took place at the intimate Cliff Bell’s club, with tickets priced at $25.
