In its 16th year, the J.C. Heard JazzWeek@Wayne brought about 40 high school students together for a tuition-free jazz workshop led by New Orleans legend Shannon Powell teaching traditional styles. The Wayne State jazz faculty lineup included Chris Collins, Vincent Chandler, Russ Miller, Chuck Newsome, Paul Keller, and David Taylor. The main concert started at 7:30 p.m., followed by an open jam session at 9:30 p.m. where musicians with instruments got in free. The event was held at Cliff Bell’s with a $25 cover charge for the concert.
