The Northwoods Improvisers Concert in Detroit
The Northwoods Improvisers is an acoustic improvisational band formed in 1976. Founded by Mike Gilmore and Mike Johnston, the current sextet features collaborative instrumental performances, blending indigenous and Eastern musical elements.
Formed in 1976, The Northwoods Improvisers initially performed collective electro-acoustic improvised music before switching to all acoustic instruments in 1980. Founding members include Mike Gilmore and Mike Johnston, with Nick Ashton joining in 1986. The sextet consists of Mike Johnston (bass), Nick Ashton (drums), Donovan Boxey (saxophones), Dominic Bieringa (saxophones), Jack O’Brien (cello), and Mike Khoury (violin). They have collaborated with prominent musicians such as Bill Smith and late Detroit composer Faruq Z. Bey. Their music combines composed pieces with collective improvisation, eastern modes, and Native American elements, reflecting musics historically underrepresented in history. The group recently completed a new album to be released in September 2023.
