Mason Bays
Mason Bays, a trumpet player from Pontiac, performed with his quintet on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 6 p.m. at Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe in Grosse Pointe Farms. Their set featured unique arrangements of jazz and Motown classics from legends like Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock.
Born in Pontiac in 1992 and raised mostly in Lake Orion, Mason Bays was diagnosed with autism early in life. He started trumpet lessons at age 12 and developed his jazz skills through high school and Oakland University, where he studied music and jazz. His quintet plays their own takes on tunes by iconic jazz and Motown artists such as Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, and Stevie Wonder. The show at Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe offered an intimate chance to hear classic and modern jazz in a cozy setting.
