Nate Topo Quartet
Nate Topo, a young saxophonist inspired by jazz greats like Lester Young and Eddie Harris, played July 17 at 7 p.m. at the Blue LLama Jazz Club in Ann Arbor. His vintage saxophones shaped his soulful, melodic sound.
Starting right out of high school, Nate Topo began singing his own songs and released a debut album featuring mentors like Gayelynn McKinney, Ralphe Armstrong, and Vincent Chandler. His talent has taken him beyond Detroit to cities like Los Angeles and New Orleans, where he played with jazz legends including Charlie Gabriel and Shannon Powell.
Nate focuses on an individualistic approach to the saxophone, inspired by revolutionaries such as Lester Young and Eddie Harris. His unique tone comes in part from his collection of vintage saxophones—including a 1919 tenor, 1926 alto, 1906 soprano, and 1970 baritone—that help him recall the sounds of his influences while exploring new sonic ideas.
