Marquis Hill Concert
Chicago trumpeter Marquis Hill played at Blue LLama Jazz Club in Ann Arbor on Sunday, August 10, at 6 p.m. His set blended modern jazz with hip-hop influences, reflecting his latest album. It was a cool night out in a lively jazz spot.
Marquis Hill grew up on Chicago’s South Side, where he absorbed genres from Motown to classic jazz in his household. This rich mix shapes his band, the Blacktet, described by the Chicago Tribune as a polished and appealing group. Winning the Thelonious Monk Institute competition in 2014 launched his international career. At Blue LLama, his show highlighted the style of Modern Flows Vol. II, mixing jazz improvisation with hip-hop beats and thought-provoking lyrics. The venue offered options for dinner with the show or just cover entry, fitting for a relaxed jazz evening.
