Brandon Woody’s Upendo
Brandon Woody, the Baltimore-born trumpeter and composer, played at Ann Arbor’s Blue LLama Jazz Club on Saturday, November 8, 2025, starting at 6:30 p.m. His music draws on jazz, gospel, and improvisation to explore themes of love, resilience, and community.
Recognized by The New York Times and Los Angeles Times as a rising figure in contemporary jazz, Brandon Woody released his debut album For The Love Of It All on Blue Note Records in 2025. At this show, his long-time band Upendo — featuring Troy Long on keys, Quincy Phillips on drums, and Michael Saunders on bass — showcased deeply personal yet broadly expressive music ranging from gentle lyricism to vibrant virtuosity.
The concert was presented in three segments from early evening into night with table reservations available. Woody’s sound reflects his deep Baltimore roots and a strong sense of community and perseverance, praised by the Washington Post for its confident warmth and sense of place.
