The Elvin Sharp Quartet, established in 2022, is recognized as a powerhouse group in the southeast Michigan jazz scene. While the lineup has seen changes, their groove and melodicism have remained consistent. The quartet includes Elvin Sharp on saxophones, Zach Sommerfeld on guitar, Sam Melkonian on drums, and Sam Corey on bass. All members are proud students of Rodney Whitaker from Michigan State University's jazz program. Their repertoire strikes a balance between underappreciated compositions by jazz masters and popular jazz standards familiar to many.
