The Detroit story

Martinez was born in the Detroit suburb of Rochester Hills before his family later moved out of state, and he built his career far from Michigan, mostly with the Los Angeles Kings. In 2014 he had one of the most dramatic postseasons in modern NHL history, scoring the overtime winner that clinched the Western Conference Final and, weeks later, the overtime goal that won the Stanley Cup itself, adding to a title he had already won with the Kings in 2012. He won a third championship with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023. Though he grew up outside Michigan for most of his childhood, his Detroit-area birth is part of the region's long list of NHL players who started out nearby.
