Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory
Palms, glass roofs, and garden history inside Belle Isle’s landmark conservatory.
01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Opened in 1904 and associated with George D. Mason and Albert Kahn, the conservatory is one of Belle Isle’s architectural signatures. Its central dome frames a garden experience shaped by plants, light, and glass. It honors Anna Scripps Whitcomb, who donated a substantial orchid collection to Detroit. The atmosphere provides a striking contrast with the neighboring aquarium.
