02 / The story of this place

Make time for these

Grand Rapids Ballet began in 1971 as the Grand Rapids Civic Ballet under founding artistic director Sally Seven. It later merged with the Summerfest conservatory school and put professional dancers under contract for the first time in the early 1990s. In 2000 it moved into a converted bus garage on Ellsworth Avenue, and in September 2007 it opened the adjoining 300-seat, LEED-certified Peter Martin Wege Theatre, creating the Meijer-Royce Center for Dance. Big productions such as The Nutcracker play DeVos Performance Hall. The 2026-27 season includes Annabelle Lopez Ochoa's Frida Kahlo ballet Broken Wings, Jerome Robbins' Fancy Free and Alice in Wonderland on February 19-21, 2027.

  • Michigan's only professional ballet company
  • A bus garage turned dance center
  • Alice in Wonderland: February 19-21, 2027
