Monument to Joe Louis — The Fist
The Fist: a monumental gesture connecting boxing history with wider struggles for equality.

01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Dedicated in 1986, Robert Graham’s monument to Joe Louis is one of Detroit’s most forceful public artworks. The suspended arm and fist evoke the boxer’s physical power, while his significance reached beyond the ring. Standing where Woodward meets Jefferson near Hart Plaza, it fits naturally between a riverfront walk and a visit to The Spirit of Detroit.
