01 / Story
The station’s story
The Millender Center, an apartment, hotel and retail complex, rose together with the People Mover; its developer billed it as the tallest pre-cast concrete structure in the United States. The station occupies its fifth floor, with lifts and escalators down to the street. A skybridge links it to the Renaissance Center, which has its own station, and another to a staff entrance of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center (the public enters city hall from the street).
It was among the first six stations of the May 20, 2022 restart. Colour-changing LED lights were added to the platform in 2010. Alvin Loving Jr.’s mural spans from the station lobby into the building’s fifth-floor atrium. When the system was split in 1999 it was a terminus of the “red line”, and in 2014–2015, while Grand Circus Park was rebuilt, riders transferred here between the two halves of the line.
From 8 p.m. the street entrance on Randolph Street and the second-level skybridge lock, though you can still leave the station.

What you see from the car
To the east the Renaissance Center’s seven glass cylinders fill the view, to the south the river and the Windsor shore. The tunnel entrance, where the Linq bus leaves for Canada, is a few steps away.

Rain, lightning, rainbows, silver-lined clouds and sunrise, a window on the world in 5,000 tiles. The Guggenheim Fellow worked at Pewabic; the mural was so large he was rolled across it on a scaffold for the final touches.

Curiosities
For the finishing touches Loving was rolled across the tiles laid out on the floor, lying on a scaffold.
The mural was funded jointly by the developers (Forest City Enterprises and Millender Center Associates), the City of Detroit and the People Mover Art Commission.
