01 / Story
The stop’s story
This stop is two platforms at two different cross streets: southbound cars stop on the west side of Woodward at Sproat Street, northbound cars on the east side at Adelaide Street. The Ilitch family announced on July 20, 2014 that the streetcar would stop at their planned arena; Little Caesars Arena opened on September 5, 2017, four months after the QLINE. The 2018 one-year report still called it “Sibley Station” and said it had changed more than any other stop in that first year.
The lessons of the first year landed here: right turns onto the I-75 service drive were restricted for the streetcar, a new drop-off point was set up for arena events, and the lane from Temple Street to the freeway was given to the streetcar. In September 2021 that stretch was painted red and marked “Transit Only”: Detroit’s first transit-only lane, shared by the QLINE and DDOT and SMART buses.
Woodward’s bridge over I-75 was torn down and rebuilt wider during the streetcar’s construction in 2014 and 2015, with weekend freeway closures. The stop’s sponsor in 2017 was Ilitch Holdings as well.
