A city symbol: a green bronze figure holding a golden sphere and a family.

01 / The story of this place

Make time for these

Marshall Fredericks’ sculpture was dedicated in 1958 outside the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. The small family held in one hand represents human relationships, and the monumental seated figure quickly became a recognizable symbol of Detroit. Close views reveal its scale and material; a wider view places it in the civic landscape. The Joe Louis monument and riverfront are a short walk away.
