Historic movie palaces / Downtown Allegan

The Regent Theatre

Allegan's one-screen Art Deco movie house, showing films since 1919 under a neon marquee. It survived a demolition threat and a collapsed roof, and today the city runs it with new releases every night for $5 or less.

02 / The story of this place

Make time for these

The Regent began showing movies in 1919 in a former livery building, and it presented vaudeville too. It got its Art Deco front and neon marquee in the 1930s, closed in the early 1980s and was saved from demolition by a nonprofit in 1990. After a restoration, a 1997 storm brought the roof down just after a show; the theatre was rebuilt and reopened in 1999. The City of Allegan now owns and runs it, with new releases every night for no more than $5, plus series like Flashback Fridays, free summer matinees, Shocktober and Fa La La Fridays. The original glass ticket booth survives, a restored 1950 Simplex XL projector is on display, there's a mural by José Narezo, and the screen is one of the largest independent screens in Michigan.
