Make time for these

United Detroit Theaters opened the Woods on February 18, 1948, with Crossfire; it was the chain's first new house in seven years. With 2,478 seats on one floor, it was very large for a suburban cinema. Charles N. Agree designed it in late Art Moderne style, with Telesonic seats for hearing-impaired patrons and an exhibition gallery rented to schools and businesses. A nearly million-dollar rebuild in 1969 and 1970 added a second screen, and Louis Wiltse later cut it into six auditoriums, one of them only 62 seats. AMC took over in 1986 and closed it on October 9, 1997.

  • 2,478 seats on a single floor
  • Telesonic seats for hearing-impaired guests
  • One auditorium had just 62 seats
